Overview
Taj Lake Palace occupies the whole of a small island in Lake Pichola, Udaipur. Known originally as Jag Niwas, the palace was built between 1743 and 1746 by Maharana Jagat Singh II, the 62nd custodian of the House of Mewar, as a summer residence for the royal family. In 1963 Maharana Bhagwat Singh Mewar converted the palace into a hotel, and the white marble buildings, with their cupolas, jharokas and thekri stonework, have since appeared in the James Bond film Octopussy.
The hotel holds 65 rooms and 18 suites, each furnished with silk textiles, teak furniture and hand-woven tapestries. Room categories range from Luxury Rooms overlooking a lily pond to the Grand Presidential Suite, a 161 square metre room named after Maharana Shambhu Singh with a long balcony over the lake. Guests reach the palace by a five-minute boat crossing from a private jetty, roughly 50 minutes by road from Maharana Pratap Airport. Three restaurants and a bar, Neel Kamal for Rajasthani cooking, Bhairo for European dishes on a rooftop terrace, Jharokha for multi-cuisine meals through the day and Amrit Sagar for cocktails, are open only to guests staying at the hotel. Meals can also be arranged aboard the palace's own barge, Gangaur.
The J Wellness Circle spa offers Indian and international therapies, drawing on both Ayurvedic and modern techniques, alongside a small fitness centre, a heated pool and an outdoor pool. Butler service is provided throughout the rooms and suites, and the hotel does not have facilities for pets.
