Rajasthan is where India's hotels became legend, and the maharajas' palaces in Jaipur, Udaipur and Jodhpur are still the reason to come. Between them are forts, step wells, the desert around Jaisalmer and the tigers of Ranthambore. Agra and the Taj Mahal sit at the start of the circuit; we arrange entry at sunrise, when it is empty and pink. A driver and car for the whole trip is the way to do it, with a guide in each city. Twelve nights covers the classic route without rushing.
