Overview

Tembo Plains Camp lies in a stretch of riverine forest on the edge of the Zambezi River, inside the private Sapi Reserve east of Mana Pools National Park. The camp's design draws on the pack-stone walls of the Great Zimbabwe Ruins, combined with canvas, so each tented suite has a semi-circular stone wall separating the bath and shower from the bedroom and lounge. The front of every suite is left open, giving an uninterrupted view of the river.

Four suites, each in a double or twin-bed configuration, make up the camp. Every suite has its own indoor lounge, an outdoor pool with exercise bikes on the veranda, and an outdoor dining area. Handmade bathtubs sit alongside indoor and outdoor showers. Guests have use of a professional camera with a selection of lenses and a pair of binoculars at no extra charge, and images and footage from the stay are downloaded and given to guests at departure. Each suite has Wi-Fi and a working area. At the centre of camp, a wine cellar and an interactive kitchen continue the stone design, and a spa and curio store sit behind weathered Zanzibar doors. Tembo Plains Camp is the only Zimbabwean safari camp that belongs to Relais & Châteaux.

The Sapi Reserve was established by Great Plains Conservation in 2016 and borders Mana Pools National Park to the west, giving guests access to a combined 337,000 hectares of protected wilderness that forms part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the middle-Zambezi biosphere reserve. Painted dogs, lions and leopards are regularly seen around the camp, along with buffalo, hippo and elephant, the last two sometimes swimming in the river itself. Activities include day and night wildlife drives, boating, canoeing, and guided walks and tracking, and a live webcam, PlainsCam, streams the floodplain in front of camp. Guests wanting a private booking can take the Zanji Suite at Tembo Plains, a two-bedroom suite let as a single booking with its own vehicle and guide.
