Resort · Shimla, India
A colonial-era estate at 2,515 metres above Shimla, once the residence of Lord Kitchener, set within 23 acres of cedar forest with a spa, library and firelit lounge.
Wildflower Hall, An Oberoi Resort, stands in Chharabra, outside Shimla, on the site of Lord Kitchener's former residence. Lord Kitchener served as Commander-in-Chief of the British army, and the building still carries the lines of a grand colonial estate: a firelit lounge, a snooker room and a well-stocked library sit alongside the guest rooms and suites. The resort sits within 93,078 square metres, 23 acres, of cedar forest at 2,515 metres above sea level, 15 kilometres from central Shimla and about three hours by car from Chandigarh.
Six categories of rooms and suites are furnished in keeping with the house's history: paisley prints, handwoven rugs, Victorian-style lamps and wooden ceiling fans appear throughout, together with a daily weather bulletin for guests planning to catch sunrise or sunset. The Lord Kitchener Suite has two bedrooms and a separate living room across 137 square metres; the Deluxe Suite covers 82 square metres with its own fireplace. Smaller rooms, each 43 to 63 square metres, look onto the valley, the forest, the Himalayas or the garden. The Restaurant serves International and Indian food indoors, in a glass conservatory or on an al fresco terrace with traditional bonfires, and The Cavalry Bar, open from noon to midnight, keeps its collection of war memorabilia on the walls.
The Oberoi Spa offers Eastern, Western and Oberoi signature treatments, with private therapy cabins set among the cedars. Guests can swim in a temperature-controlled indoor pool measuring 17.97 metres or in an open-air infinity whirlpool with views over the mountains, and the fitness centre operates around the clock. The resort meets all of its electricity needs through hydro-electric power.
