Overview
Angama Mara sits on the edge of the Oloololo Escarpment, a 700-hectare site that borders the Mara Triangle directly, with 1.2km of Rift Valley frontage and views across the plains 1,000ft below. The lodge takes its name from the Swahili for 'suspended in mid-air'. A private road runs from the property straight into the Reserve, a 10-minute drive from the gate. Part of the site is recognisable as a location used in filming scenes from Out of Africa.
The lodge is arranged as two identical, separate camps, each with 15 en-suite Tented Suites, for 30 in total. The suites span over 100 square metres including the deck, with 11-metre wide floor-to-ceiling glass frontage, polished parquet floors and canvas construction, and the red brickwork echoes local Maasai dwelling finishes. Each camp also has two sets of interconnected suites for families travelling together. Guest areas include the Map Room, a Safari Shop and Beading Studio where Maasai women work daily, a Photographic Studio with editing facilities and camera rental, a 12-metre rim-flow swimming pool overlooking the Mara, and a Fitness Room with Technogym equipment behind floor-to-ceiling glass.
Days are built around game drives into the Mara Triangle, hot-air balloon flights over the plains, walking safaris with Maasai naturalists, and gatherings such as the sundowner Boma and a lantern-lit Forest BBQ. Angama Mara is a 45-minute flight from Nairobi, on scheduled services from Wilson Airport or by charter from Jomo Kenyatta International. Kenya is a malaria area and insect repellent is provided at the lodge. Children of all ages are welcome, with interconnected suites available in each camp and specific arrangements for families travelling with younger children.
