Overview

COMO Uma Paro stands on a tree-clad hill above the town of Paro, a ten-minute drive from Bhutan's international airport. The resort's villas and rooms pair traditional Bhutanese craftsmanship, worked by local artisans, with the clean lines of contemporary design. A one-bedroom villa, built as a freestanding structure among the surrounding pine forest, holds a separate living area, bedroom and kitchen, giving guests privacy and space of their own. Eight villas in total each have their own therapy suite, so treatments can be taken in private.

The resort's restaurant, Bukhari, takes its name from the traditional Bhutanese fireplace at the centre of its circular, pavilion-style dining room. Much of the produce comes from an organic kitchen garden maintained with farmers in the Paro Valley, and the kitchen is known locally: Bhutan's royal family are regular visitors. Uma Bar serves an all-day menu drawing on the COMO Shambhala Kitchen and can be booked for private gatherings. COMO Shambhala Retreat adds four treatment rooms, two private Bhutanese hot-stone bathhouses, an indoor heated pool with a mountain-facing sundeck, a fitness centre, a yoga studio and steam rooms.

Guests can ride to Chele La Pass for views of Mount Jhomolhari, walk to Taktsang Monastery, known as the Tiger's Nest, try archery, Bhutan's national sport, or take part in a butter lamp lighting ceremony. Complimentary during a stay are group yoga classes, archery and darts lessons, walking stick rental with snacks for hikes, an in-room yoga mat with meditation videos, and access to the COMO Shambhala pool and gym. Multi-night itineraries combine COMO Uma Paro with its sister resort COMO Uma Punakha, or extend into longer treks such as the ten-night Tradition and Thunder Trek.
