Lodge · Punakha, Bhutan
COMO Uma Punakha sits on a hill above the Mo Chhu river in Punakha Valley, a five-hour drive from COMO Uma Paro, with access to white water rafting, hiking and the COMO Shambhala Retreat spa.
COMO Uma Punakha stands on a small hill at the western end of the Punakha Valley, above the Mo Chhu river. It is the smallest of the Uma lodges, a five-hour drive from COMO Uma Paro and the international airport at Paro. There is no private car hire in Bhutan; transport between Uma properties is arranged by Uma staff.
The lodge's suites are built of handcrafted stone, wood and tiles. Furniture is painted with flowers by local artists, bedcovers are Indian cotton with hand-stitched patterns referencing Bhutan's Buddhist culture, and rugs are hand-knotted in nearby Nepal. Every room looks over the Punakha Valley and the Mo Chhu as it moves through rice fields and orchards.
Bukhari, named after the traditional Bhutanese fireplace, serves produce from the Punakha Valley alongside dishes from Bhutan, India and further afield. Guests can request a tour of the resort's own garden, where herbs, spices, fruit and vegetables are grown, or arrange private dining on a villa terrace or beside the Mo Chhu. COMO Shambhala Retreat offers two treatment rooms and a traditional hot stone bath house, with treatments drawing on the Himalayan setting. Beyond the lodge, guests raft the Mo Chhu past the Punakha Dzong, hike through forest and mountain terrain, or take part in Bhutanese customs such as butter lamp lighting and an anniversary blessing with the exchange of khadhar scarves.
