Hotel · Izumo, Japan
A hot spring ryokan on the Hinomisaki coast of Izumo, with rooms facing the Sea of Japan and a nightly outdoor performance of local myth.
KAI Izumo stands on the coast at Hinomisaki, in Taisha-cho, Izumo, in an area closely tied to Japanese mythology. The hotel has 39 guest rooms, each taking between one and six guests, many with views over the sea toward sunset, twilight and dawn. The onsen baths are fed by chloride-rich hot spring water and look out over shallows dotted with small islands.
Dinner draws on seafood from the Sea of Japan, served as kaiseki courses on dinnerware whose designs are traditionally considered lucky. The seasonal menu includes Uzuni Nabe, a dish built around conger eel and local chicken in a sake-infused broth, inspired by a dish served at the Fukujin-sai festival at Izumo Taisha Grand Shrine. From November to March, a winter dinner centres on snow crab, served as gratin and sashimi among other preparations. Breakfast draws on regional ingredients and techniques, with a Western-style option available outside the New Year period. Vegetarian kaiseki and breakfast are available on request, free of the eight major allergens, and children's platters are offered for ages 4 to 11. Meals are taken in semi-private rooms suited to couples, families and small groups.
In the evening, staff perform a piece of traditional regional theatre on an outdoor stage facing the sea, depicting the origin myth of Izumo Taisha Shrine. KAI Signature Rooms carry decor inspired by the changing colours of the sea off Shimane, visible through a large picture window. The property is a short distance from Izumo Taisha Shrine, Hinomisaki-jinja Shrine and the Hinomisaki Lighthouse. Check-in is from 2:30 PM and check-out by 11:00 AM; Wi-Fi is free throughout, private parking is available without reservation, and pets are not permitted.
