Asia · Japan
Island art museums, a floating shrine and a calm sea between three of Japan's four main islands.
Our notes
The Seto Inland Sea is a sheltered stretch of water dotted with small islands between Honshu, Shikoku and Kyushu. Naoshima and Teshima hold the contemporary art museums that turned the region into a destination; Miyajima has the torii gate standing in the water; Onomichi and the Shimanami Kaido give one of the best cycling routes in Asia. Hiroshima is the gateway and deserves a day. The climate is the mildest in Japan and the sea is calm, which makes spring and autumn particularly comfortable.
