Hotel · Tamatsukuri, Japan
A 24-room hot spring ryokan in Tamatsukuri Onsen, Matsue, Shimane, built around baths fed by a spring used since the 8th century.
KAI Tamatsukuri sits in the Tamatsukuri Onsen district of Matsue, Shimane, around five minutes by car from Tamatsukuri Station. The ryokan has 24 rooms, each taking one to three guests, and draws its baths from the Tamatsukuri Hot Spring, whose skin-rejuvenating properties have been recorded since the 8th century. Guests can bathe both in the shared bath halls, which include a wide indoor bath and a rock-lined outdoor bath, and in baths built into the rooms themselves.
Meals follow the kaiseki format, built around seafood from the surrounding seas: rosy seabass, clams and snow crabs feature through a menu that changes with the seasons. Breakfast offers a choice between a Japanese set, with shijimi clam soup and grilled dried rosy seabass, and a Western-style alternative. Shimane's long association with sake, which local legend places as the drink's birthplace, is marked each evening with a Sake Bar event, and kaiseki dinners can be paired with sake chosen from the ryokan's selection. Vegetarian kaiseki and breakfast are available on request, prepared without the eight major allergens.
KAI Signature Rooms take their decoration from the ancient magatama beads once produced in the region, with artwork inspired by the river running through the Tamatsukuri Hot Spring district. The hotel is within reach of several Shimane landmarks, including Matsue Castle, the Adachi Museum of Art, Izumo Taisha Shrine, the Iwami Ginzan Silver Mine and the Oki Islands. Facilities on site include a spa and massage service, a pool, a playroom, a meeting room and private parking with EV charging points available around the clock.
