Overview

Mara Plains Camp sits inside the private Olare Motorogi Conservancy, on the northern boundary of the Maasai Mara National Reserve. The camp is built along the bends of the Ntiakitiak River, within a stretch of riverine forest. Seven canvas suites stand on wooden decks, raised on recycled railway sleeper decking, giving each room a clear line of sight over the surrounding bush. Guests here can move between the private conservancy and the national reserve, an arrangement few camps in the region can offer. Mara Plains Camp is a Relais & Châteaux member, one of only a handful of such properties in Kenya.

Each suite is built under a deep canvas canopy and finished with a copper bath in the en-suite bathroom. Private verandas run the length of each suite, now fitted with a wood-burning stove for cooler nights, and discreet over-bed air conditioning for warmer ones. A professional camera with a selection of lenses is left in every suite for guests to use without charge, along with a pair of high-quality binoculars; images taken during the stay are later shared through a private online gallery. The camp runs on a solar power system, purifies its own water and recycles organic waste from the kitchen.

The Olare Motorogi Conservancy has the lowest vehicle density of any area in the Maasai Mara region and the highest concentration of big cats recorded anywhere in Africa. Many of the Maasai Mara's 300 recorded bird species pass through the camp grounds, and after dark Maasai warriors walk guests to and from their rooms as hippos and leopards call through the forest. There is no fixed schedule at Mara Plains: meal times and game drives are arranged around each guest's preference and whatever the conservancy's wildlife is doing that day. Conservation fees paid by guests go toward protecting the conservancy and support over 1,000 Maasai families who partner in its management.
