Overview

Mpala Jena is a six-suite camp on the banks of the Zambezi River, within Zimbabwe's Zambezi National Park and upstream from Victoria Falls. Architects Craig Hayman and Hannah Charlton, working with interior designer Tracy Kelly, built the camp from thatch, stone and canvas, with a central area that holds a lounge, dining room, bar and swimming pool facing the river. Ancient trees shade the property and sandy banks lead down to the water.

The camp has four large double or twin suites and two family suites, each with two bedrooms. Every suite stands beneath sand-coloured canvas with a canopy ceiling, a private shaded veranda and views toward the river. Bathrooms are en suite with double vanity basins, an indoor shower and separate toilet, plus an outdoor bathroom with a bathtub and shower. Rooms are air-conditioned.

Activities run on land and water: safari drives and guided walks through Zambezi National Park, boat trips on the river in flat-bottomed motorised boats, and catch-and-release fishing, with tiger fishing best from June to December. A half-day tour of Victoria Falls can be arranged, along with helicopter transfers and scenic flights at extra cost. Elephant and buffalo sightings are common from June to October, and the park also holds lion, leopard, hyena and antelope. Mpala Jena has supported the Zambezi Parks Support Foundation since 2023, including the deployment of 13 scouts and the donation of a riverboat for river patrols.
