Our notes
Rome is best taken in layers over four or five nights. A hotel in the centro storico puts the Pantheon and Piazza Navona within a walk and the Vatican across the river. We arrange early access to the Sistine Chapel before the crowds, a private guide through the Forum, and tables at the trattorias in Monti and Trastevere that do not need a reservation until they do. Late spring and October are the months to come. August is hot and half the city is closed.
